This is my tribute page to one of the greatest Bluesmen of al time, Sonny Boy Williamson 2. Willie Miller at birth, called Rice because of his love for a bowl full of it with sugar!
Willie Miller was born Dec 5.1897 in Glendora, MS, he died May 25, 1965, in Helena Ark. He taught himself to play Harp, around his fathers wood pile, at age 5. By 9 he was good enough to earn tips at local parties, in the 1930s he was playing the Blues with the likes of Sunnyland Slim, Elmore James, Big Boy Crudup, and was playing the night Robert Johnson was poisoned (The guy who sold his soul to the devil). Which changed Sonny Boys drinking habits to never drinking from a bottle he, or someone he knew, didn't open. In 1941 he and Robert, Jr. Lockwood got a job playing mid-days on a small radio station in Helena Ark, the announcer trying to cash in on Sonny Boy Williamson's popularity on records called him Sonny Boy Williamson. And that was the name he was best remembered as, he later insisted that he was the original(from The Encyclopedia of The Harmonica by Peter Krampert) .There are all sorts of stories about ole Rice, I'm not gonna perpetrate any new ones. BTW He got the name Rice cause he loved rice, milk, and sugar. So does my mother. What is beyond dispute is that he was a one of a kind singer/songwriter/Blues Harp player. At the bottom of this page is a link to 'fessor Mojos Sonny Boy site. That's where to go for the word on Sonny Boy.
